Keep Your Heart Healthy – Know Your Numbers

High Cholesterol and high blood pressure have no symptoms, so there are no warning signs.
Yet they are two major risk factors for heart disease and stroke.

Target Numbers

  • Adult blood pressure readings should be lower than 120/80.
  • Total Cholesterol – 200 or less
  • Low Density Lipids (LDL) – 100 or less
  • High Density Lipids (HDL) – 40 or greater

Diabetes Is A Growing Epidemic

Nearly 7 % of Nebraskans have been diagnosed with diabetes, and another 20% have it, but have not been diagnosed.  The good news is that scientific studies have proven that even with high-risk factors we can prevent or delay the onset of Type 2 diabetes (90% of people with diabetes have this type).

  • Lose 5 – 7 % of your weight
  • Exercise moderately (such as walking) 30 minutes 5 times per week
  • Stop smoking
  • Control blood pressure & cholesterol

Reduce Cancer Risk by Changing Lifestyle Behaviors

  • Don’t use tobacco or be exposed to secondhand smoke.
  • Eat more fruits and vegetables and less red meat.
  • Get screened for cancer.
  • Do self-examination to detect changes in your body.
  • Talk to your doctor about cancer family history.

What can you DO with 60 minutes a day?

  • Run, walk, climb, bike, play tag, tumble… get up and MOVE!
  • Create an environment that encourages movement and healthy eating.
  • Educate youth about how and why to get moving.
  • Teach kids to have fun with physical activity

 Make the Decision to Quit

Realize that many tobacco users try to quit five to seven times before they achieve long-term success.
Each attempt teaches you a bit more about what worked and didn’t work for you.
Think of each attempt as short periods of success.
